Why will my furnace pilot not stay lit after we turn the heater on?
We tried lighting the pilot on, it will stay on if we don't turn the furnace lever to the "on" position. Once we turn the lever on and set the thermostat to the desired temp, the pilot turns off.We live in a mobile home, during the winter it gets so cold we can't sleep.
If you have a standing pilot light (stays lit 24/7) first off is the pilot flame blue and large enough to heat up the thermocouple next to it. If the pilot flame shows a lot of yellow flame in it this is an indication of a dirty or partly clogged pilot orfice. You can remove and clean it if you know what to do. Also for the few dollars it costs, replace the themocouple while you are in the furnace. TURN OFF THE GAS BEFORE YOU WORK ON THE PILOT LIGHT.
If the pilot flame is healthy, the gas valve may be at fault. I recommend letting a pro do this job. They can source the correct gas valve and give you a gaurentee on the work.
