Doors Come In Every Shape And Style Imaginable

Think of any building and there is one thing that they all have in common, whether it be a terraced house or a stately home, a office block or a school, your local newsagent or a department store. They all have doors. Since man started to live in homes we have been using doors they come in all shapes and sizes but basically they are a moveable object which covers an opening allowing access but keeping the elements out. Not only are doors used on the outside of our homes but they are also used internally and on cupboards, in our offices, on the vehicles we drive they are all around us everywhere we look they are part of our everyday lives and we rarely take the time out to stop and notice them.

Almost every building in the world uses doors not only allowing access in and out of the building but also allowing access and segregation of internal rooms within the building. When open, doors allow ventilation around a building and when closed a door helps to insulate a building and stops the heat from escaping. Many doors now include double glazing which also helps to increase the amount of natural light in a building. They also act as a barrier to noise both from other rooms internally with the building and externally from outside of the building.

Doors are also used to divide up buildings for aesthetic reasons. For example think of a grand hotel, doors are used to separate the plush surroundings of the hotel which the guests have access to and the not as nice service areas which only the staff have access to. Doors themselves can also be very ornate they can add to the overall appearance of a property drastically.

Doors can be made out of many different types of material including wood, metal and becoming more popular recently UPVC. You can get either solid doors or doors which include glass which itself comes in many different styles including stained glass, distorted glass, toughened glass and plain glass to name but a few.

There are also many different types of door available including stable doors which are divided in half horizontally. As they name suggests these were used for animals such as horses. Sticking with the animal theme there are barn doors these tend to be huge doors due to the size of the barn. There are also saloon doors made popular by western films they are usually found in pairs and are lightweight swing doors that open in both directions and usually only start at the knee. Blind doors or secret doors are not immediately noticeable they have no trim and blend in with their surroundings helping to disguise the door. French doors have multiple windows set into them and are popular in houses allowing easy access to the garden. Sliding doors or patio doors are made of glass and slide open effortlessly. Bifold doors as the name indicates are doors which open by folding back on themselves they are often used when a large opening is needed to be filled. These are just a few of the different types of doors which are available.

When you are walking round today take to the time to notice all the different doors which you pass through, You will be amazed at all the different styles and types of door which you will probably never have noticed previously.
