How do I keep the bar down on the door handle?
I own a restaurant and we just moved to a new location. I love everything about it, but I can't figure out how to get the door to stay unlocked. The doors have the bar you push down to get the door open from the inside. I can get in with the key, but I can't get it to stay unlocked. Any ideas? The keys are Corbin-Russwin if that helps.
Some you use the key to keep them unlocked, and others have a set screw that you turn on the hinge side that keeps the latch retracted. With the key type, most commonly they can be turned in either direction to open, but one of the two directions allows you to lock the latch in the retracted position. For this, you push the latch in manually, insert the key and turn it (one way or the other - you'll have to try both) till you hear it click. If you do, it will then stay retracted when you let go of the latch. If this doesn't work in either direction, then look at the hinge side of the handle. You should see either the set screw or a hole for the set screw. Put the proper size allen wrench in there, and while you hold the bar to the open position (inward toward the door) turn the screw till it stops. That should hold the bar in and the latch retracted. For this type, you will have to remember to reverse it every day when you close. For the key type, you set the latch free with the key going in the opposite direction that it set in.
