Preventing Burglary and Theft - Are You Doing Everything You Can to Protect Your Family and Home Against Thieves
Overall, we are seeing a decline in reports of burglary and theft. And yet, burglaries are still the second most common serious crime that occurs in the United States. While police and local authorities are doing everything they can to put a stop to crime, actually seeing burglaries come to an end is about as likely to happen as hearing the oinking of a pig flying by. In other words...don't count on it.
Unfortunately, it's a fact of life in knowing burglary is something that cannot be stopped. And it's important to remember that burglars will always be out there lurking, waiting and watching for their next victim.
Fortunately over the years, home burglaries have received a lot of attention. As a result, much of what home owners have learned through that attention has helped lower the number of burglary crimes that have occurred...at least based on data that have been reported. Now you can use this knowledge to protect yourself and your home from burglary and theft.
- Use a home security system - some of the best options are the use of security alarms, burglar alarms, and even security cameras. If a burglar is intending on robbing your home, the site of a security system set-up is a great deterrent. His typical thought process is to hit an easy target. That being the case he avoid robbing a house where a security system would make the job more difficult.
- Use a surveillance system - while a burglar alarm or security alarm may turn some would be robbers away, it may not prevent all criminals from trying to violate you by stealing from you. A video surveillance camera is added incentive for the robber to avoid making you a victim of burglary and theft since he would be caught on film in the middle of his action. This would lead to easy conviction should he get caught.
- Property marking - is a great way to protect your home and yourself. In the event of an actual theft occurring, property marking gives you the best opportunity to get your items back once the property is recovered. It involves marking everything that you own with a signature or mark that you can easily identify. In the marking process you can use micro dots, UV pens, or even laser pens. By identifying the property this way, the idea is that it won't be easy to sell on the black market.
- Avoid the appearance of the house being empty for extended periods of time - Most home burglaries occur while the homes are unoccupied. It's best then to give the appearance that the home is not completely empty. Or if it is empty, do not give any indication as to how long it will stay that way. Therefore, apply some of these tips:
1. Leave some lights on when you leave your home, especially at night
2. Turn on a radio or TV
3. Pick up any newspapers or packages that have been delivered
- Get a dog - dogs not only provide an excellent companion but they are very protective of their domain and their owners...of course some dogs more so than others. If a burglar decided to strike your home, guaranteed he would think twice and maybe even 3 times if that many were necessary once he heard the deep growling bark you dog "Spot" would let out upon the intrusion.
Regardless of what route you decide to go, there are definite ways that you can protect your home from burglary and theft. Even though you may never be robbed, there is always a chance. And since burglaries can happen at any time, you should always be protected. If you plan ahead and take the steps above, you'll be prepared for anything that happens. You have to think in terms of self defense - and ensure that your home is protected for anyone who decides to make you a target in a burglary theft.

Where to shoot a burglar without killing him?
I currently live in a town where you normally do not even need to lock your door at night, but recently there have been a few burglaries. I own a few guns and I know that if a burglar enters my house and I feel threatened I am allowed to shoot him, but I would not be able to live with myself if he were to die. So I would like to know where in the abdomen/arms/legs it would not be lethal if it came down to where I needed to fire on him. Thank you for your future answers.
If you pull a gun on a criminal, you are not going to have time to sit there and determine where to hit him. Pull the trigger and aim for center mass. If you aim for an extremity you have a far greater chance of missing, thus giving him the opportunity to kill you.
Anyone telling you where to aim for like the “legs/arms” clearly has never been in a situation where you have to shoot for your personal safety. Even marksmen can miss an extremity. Aim for center mass and shoot. He forfeited his life when he puts your life in danger.
Stop worrying about him. Worry about yourself.
