Lock Bumping - Why Your Home's At Risk

Lock bumping is a technique used to bypass common home locks. It is called bumping because a special key is made that, once inserted into the lock, will cause the pins to jump to their shear line when the key is "bumped" by an object. With the pins at the shear line, the lock will turn just as if a key had been used. A video demonstrating this technique is available for viewing within our Phoenix Locksmith Knowledge Center.

What's the Risk?

Unfortunately for homeowners, the internet has made the knowledge necessary to use this key-bypass technique commonplace. Additionally, many websites are selling the necessary keys for just a few dollars. In short, anyone with an internet connection and some small change can theoretically get into your home.

Who's at Risk?

Every homeowner that had locks installed on their home before 2009 are at risk. That's a lot of people. Only very recently have residential lock suppliers developed locks that are bump resistant. The two most common are the Kwikset Smartkey and Schlage SecureKey. Even with the new technology being available, most homebuilders have yet to include it in the homes they're selling.

How Do You Protect Yourself?

A new product on the market can be easily installed for a few dollars and has proven to be the most effective and least costly method to combat lock bumping. This product secures your deadbolt so that no matter what is used in an attempt to turn it, even a working key, the lock hold tight. It's quickly become this Phoenix Locksmith's #1 Home Security Tip.

Another inexpensive way to improve your home's lock security is to take your door locks into a locksmith shop. Locksmiths can install special pins that make it much more difficult, though not impossible, to bump a lock. If taking your locks to a shop is not possible, the locksmith can come to your home for an additional service charge. Even after the additional charge, this will prove less expensive than replacing all of your locks.

A second method is to add a bump-proof lock to your doors. This is in addition to your current locks. We recommended homeowners install half deadbolts for this purpose. Half deadbolts are deadbolts that behave normally inside on the home, but the exterior of the door has no keyhole. That is, there is no indication on the outside of the home that a lock is even installed, thus it is pick and bump proof. Households with small children realize a secondary benefit in that the lock is installed above the existing locks it cannot be reached by small children looking to go out and play.

Lastly, homeowners can replace their existing locks with the newer bump-resistant locks available. Though likely the most expensive solution, it has the cosmetic benefit of the latest styles and finishes.

Though lock bumping is a persistent problem for homeowners looking to improve their home's security, there are various solutions available. Given your home contains your most valuable possessions, solutions are well worth their cost.
