Buying Tips for Locks and Safes

All Locks and Safes are NOT Equal

If you think one size fits all when it comes to locks and safes, think again!  All locks and safes are not created equal.  The notion that you can run down to the store, pick up a just any old lock, and now you're completely protected is just not even close to true.  The same is true for safes.  Purchasing locks and safes without doing a little personal needs analysis and research is a huge mistake.  And it's so easy nowadays to do research.  Just jump online and do a search.  Type into the search bar as specific a question about locks and safes as you can possibly think of.  Then read the first 5 - 7 results and you're on your way to learning...or should I say researching your particular needs.

No Whim Locks and Safes Purchases

It's amazing to me, but people actually do this.  They will see a special at one of the large discount retail chains and make a whim purchase right on the spot.  After all, it was on sale.  How about the one about the guy who did this, got his new safe loaded and then unloaded into his home, went to put his guns in it, only to learn that it had compartments that were fixed.  He needed a gun safe but he purchased a safe designed for documents and jewelry.  Had this individual done some personal needs analysis and research, he would have known to look specifically for a gun safe.

When it comes to locks, most people honestly just go with what's available.  But a lock is generally thought of as your first line of defense against burglary and home invasion.  Whether you're talking door locks or pad locks, do a little research.  As I said, it's easy to do online.  For example, search the term "lock ratings." Or you can search a specific brand.  Try a search within Underwriters Laboratories and see what they have to say.  They've been rating locks and safes for years.

Locks and Safes Limitations

Having determined your specific locks and safes needs, make sure you know your own limitations.  For most, budget can be a limitation.  If you need serious protection but your budget is seriously limited, then you should be honest with yourself and not play games.  Either hold off until you can afford what you truly need or make some other arrangements.  It's futile to need a safe to protect valuable documents from fire but actually settle for a safe not adequately rated for what you need, then have a fire and find everything destroyed in the safe.

Another limitation is along the lines of physical.  For example, if you have knee problems a floor safe is not going to work very well for you due to serious accessibility issues.  I know this is common sense.  My purpose in sharing this about locks and safes is simply to encourage you to think things through.  After all, you're dealing with protecting valuables, which includes YOURSELF and those you love when it comes to locks.
